Exploring the Sunless Sea

Imagine yourself as the captain of a steamship out on the high seas, only something isn't quite right. The ocean isn't as you pictured it, and instead of traversing the shimmering blue ocean you find yourself surrounded by darkness. That's the story of Sunless Sea, an adventure from Failbetter Games. We're excited to be partnering with Failbetter Games on the Sunless Sea Wiki, giving fans of this indie gem a place to look up information about the game, as well as keep up with the latest news.

Keep reading to see what it is that makes Sunless Sea stand out in the sea of indie titles already available... yeah, it was a bad pun. Just keep reading.

At its core, Sunless Sea is a top-down 2D exploration adventure set in the award-winning Victorian Gothic universe of Fallen London. As you explore the black waters on your quest to discover hidden treasures, you will battle against enemies that emerge from the ocean, as well as unseen dangers aboard your ship. As you and your crew combat the crippling loneliness of being away from the comforting light of civilization, you and your crew will slowly succumb to madness. Will you have the constitution to survive the vast aloneness and return with unfathomable treasures, or will you succumb to your madness? That is a question that each game will provide a different answer for.

As you progress in the game, you will be able to reap the rewards of your adventures. You will be able to upgrade your steamship with new engines and weapons, or even buy a new, larger, more powerful ship to replace your old one. Each hand-picked member of your crew comes with their own perks, as well as their own unique stories that can be learned - if you know how to coax it out of them. You'll have plenty of opportunity to learn about your crew as you explore areas of Fallen London, selling the goods you find on your adventures and improving your ship.

Sunless Sea is currently available as part of Steam's Early Access program, which lets you play the game and see it grow from beta to release. If you want to learn more about the specifics of the game, our Sunless Sea Wiki offers rundowns on the different ship types, what treasure awaits you, the kinds of monsters and random events that you will dot your journey, and much more.
