Next Assassin's Creed To Feature New Hero, New Era

Ubisoft has announced this morning that the next Assassin's Creed game will once again take the franchise to a completely new era, putting players into the boots of an entirely new protagonist. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as we expected the studio to explore the story of Connor Kenway a little more fully before moving in a different direction.

Speaking in a investor call this morning, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that the next Assassin's Creed game will be shipping in fiscal year 2014, which actually ranges from April 1, 2013 - March 31, 2014. We would, however, be very surprised to see the game ship in 2013, with absolutely no promotion so far. We'd put our money on a 2014 calendar year release date. Perhaps a Spring ship date is in order for what we're assuming will be called Assassin's Creed IV?

We really enjoyed Assassin's Creed III, picking it up on Xbox 360 when it launched and then re-buying it on the Nintendo Wii U when that console hit shelves last year. We really enjoyed the story of the half-Native American, half-English protagonist Connor and wouldn't have been opposed to at least one more chapter in his life. At the same time, there are so many exciting time periods that Ubisoft could choose to explore. There are already rumors being bandied about concerning the next games setting, but nothing has been announced yet. Everything from Feudal Japan to the French Revolution has been discussed in the Assassin's Creed community, so we're anxious to see where they end up going.

Also unclear at this point is which studio will be helming development, as Ubisoft Montreal just got off a massive development cycle with Assassin's Creed III and we're not sure if they are likely to pick up a brand new project of this magnitude just yet. This isn't to mention the work they're doing on Watch Dogs and Rainbow Six: Patriots.

Plenty remains unclear at this point, so stay tuned to Curse.com as we continue to follow the story!
